Serge Nef studied in Geneva, where he obtained a PhD in Biochemistry in 1996. He then completed a 5-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, USA. On his return to the City of Calvin, first in the Department of Physiology and then in the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development in the Faculty of Medicine, he worked his way up through the ranks over the next twenty years before being promoted to full professor in May 2019. His research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms and genetic programmes that regulate gonadal sex determination, testicular development and endocrine and exocrine functions. He is also pursuing research into male fertility in Switzerland, with the support of the Swiss Centre for Applied Toxicology. He was also Director of the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development. As of 15 July 2023, he is a delegate of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNIGE, in charge of faculty research platforms and premises, along with Professor Stéphanie Hugues.
