Focus 2 - Sustainability in laboratories

Promoting environmentally responsible research practices

The Faculty's laboratories are centres for cutting-edge research, but they are also among the largest consumers of resources.

According Nature:

«Labs are estimated to use 10 times more energy and five times more water than office spaces, and the average bench scientist uses around 10 times more single-use plastics than the average person.»
This second focus aims to:

Analyse current practices to understand the extent of resource consumption (energy, water, single-use plastics, etc.) and identify existing strategies for limiting resource use.

Raise awareness among research teams about environmental issues and support staff in adopting more responsible approaches.

Gather feedback from teams (researchers, technicians, students) to reconcile scientific excellence with environmental responsibility.

 Sustainability survey in laboratories

In May 2025, the Faculty of Medicine launched a survey among research group leaders to better understand current practices and needs regarding environmental sustainability. 34 groups responded, providing valuable insight into day-to-day realities in the labs.

Strong awareness: most respondents acknowledge a significant environmental impact and express a clear desire to strengthen their efforts towards more sustainable practices.

Good practices already in place: switching off equipment when not in use, sharing lab resources, and early efforts to consider more sustainable purchasing.

Priority areas for improvement: reducing single-use items, using reusable or eco-certified alternatives, and optimising the use of consumables.

Main barriers: technical or regulatory constraints, lack of clear institutional guidelines, and concerns about compromising scientific quality.

Support needs identified: targeted training, official faculty guidelines, practical tools, and opportunities to share experiences.
