Biography

Daniele Urso is a neurologist and researcher from southern Italy, currently pursuing a PhD in Global Health at the University of Geneva. His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease, particularly in their early stages, with a strong emphasis on identifying biomarkers to enhance early diagnosis and understand disease progression. At the Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Aging Brain of the University of Bari at the "Pia Fondazione Card G. Panico" Hospital, Tricase (Italy), Daniele conducts population-based studies on rare neurodegenerative diseases such as Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Frontotemporal Dementia, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. He collaborates with international experts and actively participates in initiatives aimed at improving brain health, early diagnosis, and patient care. Daniele also contributes to various groups, including the Global Burden of Disease Study, furthering global efforts to combat neurodegenerative conditions.

why is this phd important for me (my career, organization or country)?

This PhD is pivotal for my career as it allows me to acquire essential skills to enhance my epidemiological research. Specifically, it provides me with the opportunity to develop skills such as performing spatial analyses of epidemiological data on dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases—expertise that would be difficult to gain otherwise. Working with population-based data is fundamental, especially given the anticipated increase in the burden of dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions. With disease-modifying treatments not yet available or potentially not applicable on a population level, thoroughly studying the epidemiology and risk factors of these diseases is crucial. This knowledge is vital for designing effective public health programs aimed at prevention and reducing the societal impact of these conditions. Moreover, this PhD enables me to strengthen my network of collaborators and connect with colleagues in the field, fostering international cooperation. The research and expertise gained from this program will empower me to contribute significantly to national and global initiatives in dementia care and prevention, ultimately influencing public health policies in Italy and internationally.

Why did I choose this phd program?

I chose the PhD program in Global Health at the University of Geneva because its flexibility allows me to continue my role as a clinical neurologist and researcher while pursuing my studies. The program enables me to tailor my research and acquire essential skills for conducting advanced epidemiological studies on dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Access to the Swiss School of Public Health provides a high-quality curriculum and a diverse expert network, enhancing my learning and collaboration opportunities. The University of Geneva's excellent reputation and global network align perfectly with my professional goals and aspirations.
